The Role of Lymphatic Drainage in Facelift Recovery: What You Need to Know

At WaterhouseJanssen, recovery is just as important as the procedure itself. With decades of experience performing deep plane facelifts and endoscopic facelifts in London, we are committed to providing our patients with evidence-based guidance to ensure optimal healing and long-lasting results.

One key element of our postoperative protocol is lymphatic drainage massage — a gentle, medically-informed technique that helps reduce swelling, encourage circulation, and promote tissue recovery following facial surgery.

Why Lymphatic Drainage Matters After Facelift Surgery

Swelling is a natural part of healing, particularly after a deep plane or endoscopic facelift, as fluid accumulates in the tissues. Lymphatic massage helps move this fluid out of the treated areas more efficiently, reducing puffiness and accelerating your return to a refreshed, natural appearance.

Studies have shown that manual lymphatic drainage can:

  • Reduce post-surgical oedema (swelling)
  • Improve circulation and healing
  • Decrease discomfort in the early recovery period

We recommend performing this massage twice daily — morning and evening — for the first few weeks post-surgery. The technique is gentle, relaxing, and safe when done correctly. We’ve created a demonstration video for our patients to follow along at home:
